Nursery Decor

Sprinkling a nursery with childhood whimsy is made easy with fabulous vintage finds. A quick spin through GasLamp reveals chic items and retro classics. Since a child’s nursery should be a place for inspiration, displaying one-of-a-kind decorative items around the room will spark his or her imagination.

The toy horse has been on the scene for hundreds of years. The current form, a horse on bow rockers, emerged in 18th-century England. Soon, the industrialization of the Victorian era, with its burgeoning middle class, sped up the production of the toy rocking horse until many children were trotting away on one.

This antique horse dates to the 19th century and is priced at $350 in the GasLamp Too Booth T-515. It would make for a fabulous decorative item in a child’s nursery.

Adding an antique car or two to a nursery evokes an era of simpler times. This vintage original 1940s Garton Fire Chief pedal car is the perfect start for such a vignette. Garton pedal cars and toys were manufactured in Sheboygan, Wisconsin from 1879 to 1973. At $295, this pedal car is located in the GasLamp Too Booth T-366, which is operated by longtime collector John Taylor, who played with such toys at his grandmother’s house as a child.

Another such vehicle in Booth T-366 is this original Marx stake-bed delivery truck circa 1940s/early 1950s ($129). Made of pressed steel, the truck’s incredible craftsmanship and materials have withstood the years.

One trend in nursery décor is to add a touch of elegance with a smaller scale version of a classic adult item, such as this child’s chair located at GasLamp Too Booth T-108, which specializes in exquisite French antiques ($295). Not only does this European chair with needlepoint upholstery lend glamour to a nursery, it gives the new room the patina of history and culture.
